PRT 500: Non-Traditional Families & Recreation Trends
This course met the core compentencies through this project by providing the learners the ability to describe the trends and conceptual frameworks of leisure and recreation.
When I began PRT 500, I was surprised at the amount of reading and citations I had to go through. It was a wonderful introduction to graduate coursework and really inspired me to dive deeper into recreation statistics and helped ignite my passion for inclusion and equity in the outdoors.
PRT 504: REI 2021 Hiring & Training Data
This course was set up well in that it provided step-by-step directions and clear explanations of formulas, various data tables, and the importance of R-values in the analysis. To fulfill the core competencies, we were able to decide which displays of data were most appropriate and how to interpret the data we held. This class created one of my favorites projects in my graduate program and was probably the most impactful for me at work. All of our course work is applicable to my current role, but this course provided a much-needed refresher of Excel table and graph creation as it relates to statistics and data analysis.
PRT 507: Orange County, NC Marketing Plan
While I have worked in recreation marketing in the past, I appreciated the course work and readings in this class that was presented in a fun and engaging way to capture the attention of the students and help us retain the material. I did not know many of the formal marketing terms or current trends in the recreation and sports field. This course provided examples and problem sets for effective marketing tactics and allowed us to create a group marketing plan for an event of our choice relevant to one of our group members. Through lectures and our final project, we satisfied the learning objectives in order to better recognize and share worthwhile marketing programs.
PRT 503: REI Financial Analysis
This course was challenging because it taught a lot of formulas and concepts in depth about financial management in the recreation field. To fulfill core competencies, it had a great emphasis on being able to budget for sustainability and helped learners apply elements of successful financial practices to real-life situations. I appreciated the real-life example of REI's financial statements I examined in this course. This class focused more on individual learning versus group projects and it created a problem-solving conversation for all to examine and learn from one enough's ideas for sustainability in creating financial budgets.
PRT 506: Managing Ambiguity - Organizational Analysis of REI
While this was one of the densest courses content and assignment-wise, I feel I was challenged effectively to gain the core competencies of recognizing and evaluating organization behavior challenges and describing key principles to leadership and administrative practice. This is the second class I took with Dr. Bocarro and putting in many long nights of quality work produced high-quality analysis and even better constructive feedback. I learned from the guest speakers as well as many insights from my classmates in our open forums.
PRT 508: REI Risk Management Plan - Sales and Customer Support
This course was extremely effective at equipping the learner to identify and describe policies and practices for managing program and service risks, so much so, that it catapulted me into writing almost a 100-page plan that I was able to put into immediate use in my current role. There were many impassioned group discussions in this course that used real-life examples to discuss and critically evaluate risks inherent to recreation and tourism operations. This course enhanced my research and presentation skills due to its strict requirement to cite every sentence of argument relating to policy or practice. It also productive maintained core competencies in having participants discuss productive strategies for supporting healthy lifestyles and aiding in creating sustainable communities.

PRT 511: Durham Bulls Athletic Park
This course is part of the certificate program for Sport and Entertainment Venue Management. Learning objectives were met in this course by reviewing the three E's of sustainability as they relate to real-world venues, and creating policies and procedures to mitigate risk and enhance entertainment value. I appreciated the challenges of this course in creating a creative new food and drink for our venue as well as investigating facility construction and design. This is the second class our cohort had with Dr. Bunds and his passion for sustainability, creative construction, and risk mitigation is evident in his teachings. He made the material relatable and interesting especially when much of the research and papers surrounding venue management are filled with legal citations and dense articles.
PRT 505: ArcGIS Story Map
In the true spirit of the Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Sport Management program, this class was the most insightful new information I learned through hands-on engagement. I had only heard of the acronym before taking the course and didn't know what the software was or its infinite uses. While oftentimes challenging to manipulate the tools in the digital vast program, the repetition and interesting coursework kept my motivation high. This was also aided by the patience and kindness of our instructor, Dr. Vukomanovic, and her amazing TA, Will who were there to walk us through steps and field tedious questions. Of all our coursework projects, I am most proud of the StoryMap website I created to showcase the geographic data I received from the division in which I work. I also correctly assessed a shipping issue at work based on the data I analyzed through the ArcGIS program. Additionally, I still use and am asked to use the mapping function for work presentations many times a year. I believe I accomplished all the learning objectives through the items listed above as well as can now describe and explain various spatial analysis concepts and their relevance to the PRTS field.
PRT 512: Homerville Baseball Classic Tournament
This course is part of the certificate program for Sport and Entertainment Venue Management. This course was a good review of previous coursework in our MPRTSM program. It afforded us the opportunity to connect and reflect with classmates in our cohort. I treated it as almost a capstone to the other classes we took because it had elements of event creation and marketing from our classes the year before. Our group project allowed us to focus on recreation fundraising tactics and analyze benefits to the community. It allowed learners to participate in learning objectives through establishing staffing responsibilities, reviewing effective crowd and crisis management and equipped us t to cohesively describe the entertainment industry priorities.
EAC 559: A Review of The Inquiring Mind
This course was a great elective for my certificate and Professional Master program as well as highly relevant to my current professional role. I work as a training facilitator to adults around change management. Understanding the history of adult education, motivations for learning, and various learning styles was valuable in spearheading a new computer program implementation in the Summer of 2021. By catering to various learning motivations, I was able to tailor my facilitation styles to be the most effective for the staff I was instructing. This project showcases my book review of a popular study in adult education history as well as my video content creation, editing, and producing. To fulfill course objectives, at the end of the course, I started a personal library of articles and digital books related to adult education to enable me to continue on my Teaching and Communications certificate program. I can also demonstrate with my own real-world examples how I adapted my own learning objectives and goals to best suit the learners in my programs and how I can continue to grow as a facilitator and training content creator.
